Metropolitan International University students recently participated in a two-day national ID registration drive organized by NIRA at the university. This event was part of a broader nationwide initiative by the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), aiming to facilitate the enrollment and renewal of digital national identification cards. The registration began in September 2024, and efforts like the session at MIU are meant to reach younger citizens and prepare for the 2026 general elections. The drive not only targeted new enrollees but also those requiring ID renewals, leveraging updated biometric technology including fingerprint and iris scanning for enhanced security and accuracy.
NIRA’s registration campaign involves deploying over 13,000 personnel to various locations across the country, including schools and universities, to make the process accessible to as many Ugandans as possible. The move aligns with NIRA’s goal of registering millions of citizens and updating expiring identification cards during the 2024/25 fiscal year.
